9200 kVA 22 kV Rectifier Transformers for Chemical Industry in Morocco

09-12 2026 | By:

Project Overview

ZTELEC YUGUANG supplied five 9200 kVA 22 kV rectifier transformers for a chemical industry project in Morocco.

The transformers will be used in an electrolysis-to-hydrogen workshop, where the rectifier transformer is required to withstand demanding electrical loads and high low-voltage-side current during continuous operation.

The customer’s previous transformer experienced a burnout caused by excessive low-side current. Based on this operating issue, ZTELEC YUGUANG adopted a disc-type winding design to improve the transformer’s short-circuit withstand capability and resistance to electromagnetic shock.

9200 kVA Rectifier Transformer for Hydrogen Electrolysis

The transformers are designed for an electrolysis-to-hydrogen production workshop in the chemical industry.

Electrolysis systems require a stable and reliable DC power supply. The rectifier transformer serves as a key interface between the AC grid and the rectifier system, stepping down the incoming medium voltage and supplying the required electrical power for the electrolysis process.

With a rated capacity of 9200 kVA and a 22 kV primary voltage, these transformers are designed for high-power industrial operation.

Transformer Redesign After Previous Transformer Failure

A major challenge in this project was the customer’s previous transformer failure.

The previous transformer burned out because of excessive current on the low-voltage side. Therefore, simply replacing the failed transformer with the same configuration would not adequately address the customer’s operating concern.

ZTELEC YUGUANG reviewed the application requirements and focused on improving the transformer’s ability to withstand high-current and short-circuit stresses.

The solution adopted a disc-type winding structure.

Disc-Type Winding for Improved Short-Circuit Strength

For high-capacity rectifier transformer applications, the winding structure has a direct influence on mechanical stability under short-circuit conditions.

The disc-type winding design provides improved mechanical support and radial and axial stability compared with less mechanically robust winding arrangements.

For this Morocco chemical industry project, the design was selected to improve:

  • Short-circuit withstand capability
  • Mechanical winding strength
  • Resistance to electromagnetic shock
  • Stability under high-current operating conditions
  • Long-term reliability in industrial service

This design approach was particularly important because the customer’s previous transformer had failed under excessive low-side current.

IEC 60076 Rectifier Transformer Solution

The five transformers were manufactured according to IEC 60076 requirements.

The project required five identical 9200 kVA units, allowing the transformer solution to be standardized across the electrolysis workshop while maintaining the required power capacity for the customer’s production system.

The main configuration was:

5 × 9200 kVA / 22 kV Rectifier Transformers

The equipment was scheduled for a 2-month lead time, supporting the customer’s project implementation schedule.

Application in Chemical and Hydrogen Production

Hydrogen electrolysis is a power-intensive industrial process. The electrical system must handle substantial continuous current while maintaining reliable operation of the electrolysis equipment.

For this type of application, transformer design needs to consider more than rated capacity. Low-voltage current, short-circuit forces, winding mechanical strength and operating conditions are all important factors in transformer selection.

The customized disc-type winding solution therefore addressed the customer’s specific failure history rather than simply providing a standard transformer replacement.
