Silicon Steel Sheet For Transformer

Application scenariosPower transformers Distribution transformers High-voltage transformers (≥110 kV) Reactors and inductors Large electrical equipment requiring low loss and high efficiency

Grain-Oriented Electrical Steel (GOES) is a critical soft magnetic material specifically designed for manufacturing transformer cores. It features outstanding magnetic properties that significantly reduce energy loss and improve transformer efficiency, making it indispensable in modern power systems.

Overview of Grain-Oriented Electrical Steel

The defining characteristic of grain-oriented electrical steel is its highly aligned crystal structure (texture) along the rolling direction, which is also the primary magnetic flux direction in transformer cores.
This controlled grain orientation provides exceptionally high magnetic permeability and low core loss in the preferred direction.

Thanks to these advantages, GOES is widely used in power transformers, large electrical machines, and reactors where high efficiency and low energy consumption are essential.

Key Performance Characteristics

High Magnetic Permeability

Grain-oriented electrical steel exhibits extremely high permeability along the easy magnetization direction, directly contributing to higher transformer efficiency.

Low Core Loss

GOES significantly reduces iron loss (energy dissipated as heat), helping lower operating costs and improve overall energy efficiency.

High Magnetic Flux Density

It can achieve a high magnetic flux density (B value) under relatively low magnetic field strength, supporting compact and lightweight transformer designs.

Excellent Inter-Laminar Insulation

The steel surface is typically coated with a uniform inorganic insulation layer, ensuring good inter-laminar insulation and effectively suppressing eddy current losses.

Main Types and Grades

Grain-oriented electrical steel is generally classified by thickness, core loss value, and magnetic flux density.

In China, common grade systems include the Q series (Conventional Grain-Oriented) and the ZH series (High-Permeability Grain-Oriented).

Conventional Grain-Oriented Electrical Steel

  • Typical grades: 30Q130, 30Q140

  • Applications: Low-voltage and distribution transformers

High-Permeability Grain-Oriented Electrical Steel

  • Typical grades: 30ZH120, 27ZH100

  • Applications: High-voltage power transformers (110 kV and above)

  • Advantages: Lower core loss and higher magnetic induction compared to conventional grades
